Compress PDF

Make an image-heavy PDF smaller for sharing. Compression recompresses and downsamples images while keeping searchable text.

Compress and save

  1. Choose Compress PDF and open one PDF.
  2. Choose a compression level.
  3. Click Compress PDF and wait for the original size, compressed size, and space saved.
  4. Click Save PDF… and save a new copy.
  5. Open the saved PDF and check image detail before sending it.

Choose a level

  • Light: 250 dpi and 85% image quality. Keeps more image detail.
  • Balanced: 150 dpi and 65% image quality. A useful starting point for everyday sharing.
  • Strong: 96 dpi and 40% image quality. Prioritizes smaller files for screen viewing; fine detail may be lost.

Image compression is lossy. Keep the original for printing or later edits that need full image quality.

If the size stays the same

Already optimized PDFs and text-heavy documents may show little or no savings. If processing would make the file larger, DipperPDF keeps the original bytes as the result. Try a stronger level if image quality permits, or split the PDF if you need smaller attachments.

Compression does not provide OCR for scanned images. Extract Text works only with an existing text layer.
